Producer Spotlight
Kevin Anderson
(Steelehouse)
Recently Kent had the chance to sit down the Kevin Anderson and the team at Steelehouse.
Kent: How did Steelehouse get started?
Kevin: We got started in 1999, when Mark Steele and I joined forces to start a production company that centered around the talent of Mark Steele. We have always had the vision to add people and find talent. We’ve wanted to produce stuff we feel good about and that has an impact on culture. Now we have a great team and love what we get to do.
Kent: I know you have done a lot of custom work with some big name clients. Who all have you produced for?
Kevin: Well we started with a lot of youth ministry related companies. Our first big client was Teen Mania and for a while we stayed more toward the youth ministry side of things, but we have also done work for Willow Creek Assoc, Purpose Driven Ministries, Josh McDowell Ministries, Injoy, EMI, CMG, Campus Crusade, Compassion International…let’s see…
Kent: Wow. That is a pretty impressive list…
Kevin: Oh, yea.. And Women of Faith…
Kent: Obviously you are sought after for custom work, but explain to me of the structure of your team, or.. I guess what all you guys do?
Kevin: Well, like I said we started with custom work, and we are still doing that, but we also create our own stuff. We create short films (which we sell on Worship House). These include some humorous and some dramatic. We have also written two screenplays and three animated series, which we are pitching to large publishers. We are also producing David Crowder’s first video. It is actually animated, so we are pumped about that.
I guess you could say a third area that we are developing is our partnerships. We have a few partners where we co-develop content. We have worked with Igniter and an outreach ministry. We are actually doing 10 commercials in line with the 10 commandments with the outreach ministry.
Kent: That sounds cool…
Kevin: yea… we think they are gonna turn out real well…
Kent: You guys are working on a ton of stuff; tell me about your team?
Kevin: Well let’s see we have ten staff.. Let’s see (counted to ten) yea ten. We are actually looking for some talent. We could use an animator and an editor!
Kent: I will put the word out then…
Kevin: Great.. Please do.
We have two HD final cut pro base edit suites, with two editors, two full time animators and two writer/directors. Really everyone does about four things… and then we have two producers. Then, we also have some account manager/sales staff. We have a great team with some great talent.
Kent: What inspires you guys?
Kevin: We love the creative development process, we love coming up with creative ways to communicate truth. We love starting with an idea and then seeing it through to the finish product and then to see it work in the live’s of the people that experience it… Really, just like any master craftsman, I guess.
Kent: Any artists or creators that you admire or immulate?
Kevin: We love Wes Anderson, Christopher Guest, the office, Weird Al; we love the off-speed quirky kind of sense of humor.. Disney’s Nine Old Men… and of course TBN and Robert Tilton.
As far animators our guys love Anime and Meosaki
Kent: What are you guys excited about?
Kevin: Well we are really excited about our screenplay and animation series… Oh, we are excited about Sundance; we are going to Sundance, so that will be fun. Let’s see, what else…
Kent: I’ll tell them you have a cool office.
Kevin: Yea, tell them we have a cool office, you’ve been here. We are also doing the visual effects for a new product for “The Jesus Film” series, they are doing “The Jesus Film for Women.”
Kent: Wait.. What?
Kevin: (laughs), They are doing from a woman’s perspective, basically highlighting some of the female characters and telling the story from their perspective. It should actually be pretty cool.
Kent: Well, it sounds like you guys have got a creative team that is pumping out a lot of stuff… Thanks a ton for taking some time to let us get to know you guys a little better.
