Producer Profile #7
Gary Molander, Jason Rowe, Dave Wilkins
(Floodgate Productions)
WHM: How did you guys get started?
GARY: Floodgate was formed in September of 2005 out of my house. I did church videos and that was about it.
WHM: When did Jason & Dave get involved?
GARY: March 1st of this year (2006)
WHM: What were you guys doing before?
GARY: Jason got off parole finally…(laughs)
JASON: We had known each other for years and always talked about how we could use our gifts to impact the church, but couldn’t figure out a way to make it happen. I was working at a local church in the visual graphics dept. and then in October of 05 we were all in a worship band for a men’s retreat and we realized we all would rather be doing something else. Gary said it was going to happen in the next couple months, and Dave and I thought, “man this could really happen.”
DAVE: I had been doing graphic design and advertising work for a couple of different companies. It has been encouraging to look back and see how God was really preparing my life to take a risk and jump out and start this and be blessed by Him…really.
WHM: You guys have said you’ve known each other for a long time; tell us a little more about that.
GARY: I was Dave’s youth pastor starting in 1987 and he was in the 7th grade
DAVE: Gary actually did the marriage ceremony for my wife and me …
WHM: Was he a good youth pastor?
GARY: Ahh come on Kent;
DAVE: He was a great youth pastor (said totally sarcastically.. I think)
WHM: Here is the defining question…did he have a mullet?
GARY: I think we all did….Okay here is the deal…I once did a game with a toilet, Mountain Dew and a Baby Ruth
WHM: OK, you were a great youth pastor then.
GARY: So Dave and I had that relationship, and Jason served as my Creative Arts intern and worship leader. So basically I used to be their pastor…and now I’m not..(all laugh)
WHM: Moving on to your work, I have noticed a theme of redemption in several of your works, what are themes that you feel like your work is laced with?
JASON: I think a lot of our inspiration comes from years of working in the church and being worship leaders and working with people. We have seen the brokenness of people and we love when they realize that we all screwed up, but realize there is new life in Christ. We have experienced grace ourselves and love watching others experience that grace. We think a lot of people feel really stuck behind rules and we have a heart to share that message with other people and show them the grace and love that Christ offers.
GARY: I think I would use the word “restoration.” Because we are never too far-gone… ever. We are three guys who could easily be too far gone if it weren’t for the grace of God. I think that them comes out pretty loud and clear in our videos…
WHM: I think people can really connect to the thought that they are not too far gone…
GARY: …And what we want to do is not just tell them that they are not too far-gone, but to actually let them feel, in the deepest part of their heart, that they are not too far-gone… that’s when the creative arts come in.
WHM: What gives you guys inspiration?
GARY: We are all very active worship leaders and we enjoy talking to people and getting inspiration from real broken people
DAVE: …I think too, we spend time each week, not just talking about business, but also talking about what God is doing in our lives and in our church.
WHM: Any artists, in any realm you guys look up to?
JASON: I have been reading some CS Lewis, John Eldridge, and recently Donald Miller.
GARY: I think the guys at Highway started it all…I think they pioneered the idea that you could make people feel something easily through a video, and they were the first. I also like some of the Igniter stuff, and I’m not just saying that.
DAVE: These are kind of in the gallery or fine art realm: Sol Lewit, Joseph Kosuth, and musically I think U2, for sure.
