Producer Spotlight
Grant Guffin and Trey Reynolds
(Flashlight Films)
This month WorshipHouse Media caught up with Grant and Trey at the NRB National Convention.
Grant has been married to his wife Terri for 13 years. Grant and Terri have 2 rambunctious boys, Noah and Elijah. Grant lives in Memphis, Tennessee and has served as the Media Pastor at Germantown Baptist Church since 2001. Prior to that, he worked as a producer for the Christian Broadcasting Network and as a television sports anchor for a Fox affiliate in Alabama.
A fun fact about Grant: He scored a one-on-one interview with Michael Jordan when he was a junior in college. Sample question: "Um, Michael, you remember when you won the slam dunk competition? That was cool."
Trey has been married to his wife Emily since 2003. Trey also lives in Memphis, has served as the Director of Video Production at Germantown Baptist and is now full-time with Flashlight Films. Flashlight started in 2004.
A fun fact about Trey: Trey actually is the actor playing Jesus in Flashlight’s “Jesus Worship Elements” and “Jesus Stock Footage” projects.
Here’s a fun fact about both: They grew up 10 miles from each other, but didn’t meet until after they graduated college and were both at Regent University’s film school. Both Grant and Trey have a Masters degree in film production.
WHM: Today I’m talking with Grant Guffin and Trey Reynolds of Flashlight Films. Grant, I’ll start with you. Tell us about your background and how you first got into all this.
Grant: Well, I started in the 10th grade with my school newspaper. I was a cartoonist and sports writer. Professionally, I was a sports anchor right out of college.
WHM: Where did you go to college?
Grant: I went to Samford University and majored in Broadcasting/Journalism.
WHM: Trey, you didn’t go to Samford did you?
Trey: Roll Tide! That’s The University of Alabama.
WHM: I’m sorry. Moving on. What inspires you guys? Where do you get ideas?
Grant: I get inspiration from everyday life and from being in the church and seeing what I feel are messages that people need to hear. Really, I try to figure out who it is we’re wanting to connect with and work backwards from there.
Trey: It’s pretty much the same for me. I’m an observer. I look at life, my interactions with people, events that happen and things I read. Stuff like movies and movie trailers, plays, and TV commercials can all spark an idea.
WHM: Who do you respect as an artist or filmmaker?
Both: U2.
WHM: I agree. Others?
Grant: Trey is tired of hearing this, but my favorite filmmakers are the Cohen brothers. I just love their off-the-wall view of the world. I like the movie “Contact” and the TV shows “The Office” and “My Name is Earl”.
WHM: Me too! Trey?
Trey: People like Steven Spielberg and David Fincher.
WHM: What does Flashlight Films currently offer?
Both: Worship Elements (Jesus and Christmas), Stock Footage (Jesus and Christmas), and mini-movies such as Proverbs 31 Woman, Dear Dad, Incarnation and Apostle’s Creed.
WHM: What can we expect to see from Flashlight in the future?
Both: Individual/topical video clips, a new and improved website and store, message/sermon packages and a top-secret project that we can’t talk about.
