It’s been a while, so we thought it would be fun to do a little trivia giveaway!

    Hey guys, great site and thanks for the opportunity!

    1. It originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War.
    2. Freedmen (freed slaves) knew of the Union dead and decided to honor them. However, Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan.

    2. On May 5, 1868, he issued General Orders No. 11, which set aside May 30, 1868,
    1st official Government recognizing: In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson officially appointed Waterloo New York as the birthplace of Memorial Day
    2. It wasn’t until 1971 that congress declared Memorial Day to be a national holiday and expanded it to include all veterans not just those that died in the civil war. The date was moved to a the last Monday in May under the Uniform Holiday Bill. President at the time: Richard Nixon

    1. In 1882, the term “Memorial Day” first came into use, however it was not widely accepted until after World War II. The holiday remained focused on the Civil War until just after World War I, when it was expanded to include those Americans who had fallen in all conflicts. With this expansion, many of the Southern states that had refused to take part began to observe the day.

    2. In May 1966, recognizing that most early celebrations were local in origin or not annual events, President Lyndon B. Johnson bestowed the title of “Birthplace of Memorial Day” upon Waterloo, NY. But, going way back to after the Civil war days,
    General John Logan first recognized Memorial Day to honor the Union soldiers who died ib the Civil war.

    1. The first known Memorial Day observance was in Charleston, SC, on May 1, 1865. 257 Union prisoners died there and were hastily buried in unmarked graves. Freed slaves decided to honor them and together with teachers and missionaries, organized a May Day ceremony. Years later, it was called the “First Decoration Day” in the North.

    2. General John Logan, May 5, 1868. Later in 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May.

    I know I am a bit late on this, but noticed a bit of inconsistency as to the actual start.

    1. The Battle of June 9, 1864 [Pertersburg, Va], however it wasn’t called Memorial Day until after The Civil War, until that point it was called Declaration Day and only observed by the Confederate States.

    2. Originally noted by Mrs Mary Simmerson Cunningham Logan [wife of Gen John Alexander Logan [C-I-C of GAR]] He then made the movement to the GAR to observe the fallen soldiers for the Union Armies as the Confederate were already doing in Petersburg, VA. [Observed by Mrs Logan on a trip in early spring of 1868]. It was then brought before congress and voted unanimously adopted & Certified June 22nd, 1868 then first observed Nationally May 30th, 1869.
